Small biz marketing in 2022

Marketing Trends & Tips

We made it to the end of 2021 and that means the release of endless retrospectives from content creators, journalists and media companies on trends that “popped” over this year. We can all agree that there are enough of those, so you won't find that content here. Small businesses need to focus on the next 3-6 months so I'm talking 2022 trends. Let’s get into it.

2022 - She’s A Rainbow

The 411: According to Pinterest forecasting data, the year 2022 will bring back bright! bold! rainbow! COLORS. Yes, long are the days of neutrals and over-worn grey WFH sweatpants. (Personally, I’ll continue to take part in both, but I'm not opposed to a lil splash here and there.) Instead, make way for electric blues, fuchsias, and more.

Bring it to life: How can a small business take part in a nationwide, even global, trend? It all comes down to the vertical. Are you a fashion retailer? Bring in pops of color whilst sticking by your foundational brand aesthetic. Large brands will dive headfirst into something see: Every Fashion Week to date. You DON’T need to fold to every fad, but you need to recognize what’s grabbing the attention of your core audience. Don’t have the color-popping pieces in your line or inventory? That’s OKAY. Upload content featuring hints of bold colors that don’t take away from your pieces i.e. nail polish, shoelaces, a golf hat, eye-shadow. Show your audience what their options are in wearing your pieces and partaking in the colorful trend. Be sure to add the content to your website as an easy way to boost SEO. Or, are you a home goods, beauty brand or florist? Maybe curate a Pinterest board featuring original photos and videos of your products or services and share with any potential clients as a “look-book of the season.” Flaunt what your offering is made of AND exemplify trends.

Added Opportunities: Have a few advertising dollars to spare? Consider shelling out a clam or two for paid Pinterest ads. This bright trend and the corresponding keyword searches within the Pinterest platform are going to be your best friend when tailoring and reaching your desired audiences through ads. Content Overload!

The 411: Content crowding is something marketers, creators and business owners have been concerned about for a while, so that's not “news”, but a trend that is making headlines for 2022 is clarifying content intent.

Bring it to life: What’s the goal of putting that video, Instagram Reel, TikTok, photo out into the digital world? What action do you want your followers, customers, audiences to take on said content? It may seem tedious to ask yourself this question each time you post, but no doubt, you’re going to see a beneficial change to your curation and likely your engagement or desired action at the end of it. Customers use social media as a first step in their decision-making process. They go to your channels to get a better understanding of the quality of products and services you provide, so give them what they’re looking for and maybe leave off a generic “Happy New Year” pixelated image found on Google.

Added opportunities: An added benefit of narrowing in on the intent of your media starting in the New Year will also clear your mind of the very 2021 stressor of, “oh my gosh! It’s been hours/days, I forgot to post!” Pause, take stock, then check out the @instagramforbusiness account on Instagram for content creation tips and tricks.
